Similar in design to its predecessor, the Treo 650, this advanced smartphone adds the convenience of a lively EV-DO mobile broadband connection, in combination with a Windows operating system.

The high speed data EV-DO wireless data chip is great for surfing the web or checking email, and Windows Mobile 5.0 is a very nice tough for IT professionals. Mobile versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook come pre-installed, as does a handy PDF viewer.

In many ways, however, the Windows operating system is a mixed blessing. It is somewhat harder to navigate than Palm OS, and doesn’t quite click with the Palm Treo hardware.

Some other potential problems with this device include the lack of integrated Wi-Fi, limited Bluetooth synchronization (requires Windows XP), and a lower screen resolution than its predecessor. The 1.3-megapixel digital camera, on the other hand, is an improvement over the 650, and if you really want Wi-Fi, you can buy a wireless SD card for under $100.

Overall, this smartphone is a good option for the mobile businessperson who needs Windows software and high-speed mobile data, but for the consumer audience, there are usually better choices.
